Madhya Pradesh will celebrate its Foundation Day this year in a distinctly different spirit. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav met Governor Mangubhai Patel at Lok Bhavan in Bhopal on Saturday and briefed him on two major upcoming programmes — the state’s Foundation Day on 1 November and the birth anniversary of tribal icon Bhagwan Birsa Munda on 15 November. The Chief Minister said the Foundation Day celebrations will be linked to the ongoing Year of Farmers’ Welfare, so that farming and the farmer become the true identity of the festival. The Governor, he added, made encouraging remarks about the state government’s work.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Chief Minister said the state is observing 2026 as the Year of Farmers’ Welfare, and the Foundation Day programmes will be woven into that spirit. In his message, he confirmed that Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary will be observed grandly across the state, and that the outline of programmes planned for the coming year was also placed before the Governor.

What happened at the Lok Bhavan meeting

At the Lok Bhavan meeting, the Chief Minister shared three things with the Governor. The first was the plan for the Foundation Day celebrations, the second was the preparation for Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary, and the third was the outline of programmes proposed for the year ahead. He said the decision to link Foundation Day with the schemes of the Year of Farmers’ Welfare was taken because agriculture and farmers are the backbone of the state’s economy and society.

The Chief Minister also said the Governor offered encouraging words on the government’s work. Such meetings are more than formalities — they are occasions when the outline of major state programmes is shared and the Governor’s guidance is sought. For a statewide festival like Foundation Day, this meeting is seen as an important link in the chain of preparations.

Why Foundation Day is linked to the Year of Farmers’ Welfare

The state government has designated 2026 as the Year of Farmers’ Welfare. Through the year, special attention is being given to agriculture, farmers and the rural economy. The Foundation Day theme follows the same idea — prosperous farmer, prosperous state. Under this theme, special exhibitions will be organised on advanced agriculture, natural farming and agricultural innovations.

Farmers, entrepreneurs and young people who have done something new in farming, or who have set an example through their hard work, will also be honoured at these exhibitions. The government believes such recognition will inspire other farmers to adopt new techniques and try new ideas. Programmes will also be held with enthusiasm at the district level, so that the festival is not confined to the capital but reaches every district of the state.

On the night of 1 November, all government buildings will be illuminated. The Chief Minister has said Foundation Day is a festival of the entire state, and talented people from across the state should get a chance to showcase their art, skills and abilities. District headquarters will also host exhibitions of local products and outstanding district-level work.

A three-day festival at Lal Parade Ground

The main state-level ceremony will be held at Lal Parade Ground in Bhopal. According to reports, the Foundation Day festival will run for three days. It will feature exhibitions on farming and farmers, symposiums on farming-related issues, and live demonstrations of innovative farming techniques. Allied sectors such as dairying, fisheries and sericulture will also be in focus, along with the processing and marketing of farm produce.

The evenings of the festival will also carry the fragrance of farming. Cultural performances on the second and third days will be themed on agriculture — folk songs sung while sowing and harvesting, and tribal dances celebrating crops. One evening will feature a grand light-and-music programme by renowned artists from across the country, followed by a fireworks display.

The exhibitions will cover themes such as Developed Madhya Pradesh-2047, One District-One Product, the state’s folk heroes, traditional arts, temple architecture, the Rishi tradition and the Heritage to Development initiative. A special fair of indigenous cuisines will also be organised, bringing the flavours of different regions of the state to one place. According to reports, a live concert by playback singer Monali Thakur will be one of the major attractions of the festival.

15 November: Birsa Munda Jayanti and tribal pride

The next major milestone after Foundation Day will be 15 November, when Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary will be celebrated. The Chief Minister has said it will be observed grandly across the state. Madhya Pradesh is home to a large tribal population, which gives the day special significance for the state. 15 November is also observed as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, or Tribal Pride Day.

Birsa Munda led a tribal uprising against British rule in the late nineteenth century. His struggle was not merely a rebellion, but a fight to protect his people’s land, forests and identity. That is why he remains a source of inspiration for tribal communities even today. The Chief Minister said celebrating his birth anniversary grandly will help connect the younger generation with his life and struggle.

The formation of Madhya Pradesh and the meaning of Foundation Day

Madhya Pradesh was formed on 1 November 1956, following the reorganisation of states. The regions of Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh and Bhopal were merged to create the new Madhya Pradesh. Later, on 1 November 2000, Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh as a separate state, which is why both states celebrate their Foundation Day on 1 November.

Foundation Day is not merely a date. It is a symbol of the state’s identity, culture and journey of development. Every year, the day is used to recall the state’s achievements and chart the road ahead. This time, linked to the Year of Farmers’ Welfare, the festival will bring the story of farming and farmers to the fore — the sector regarded as the state’s greatest strength.

What happens next

Attention will now turn to the preparations for Foundation Day. The outline of programmes at district headquarters will be finalised, exhibition preparations will be completed, and the list of artists for the cultural programmes will be given final shape. The government’s effort is to ensure maximum public participation, so that the event becomes a people’s festival rather than merely a government programme.

The message of linking the Year of Farmers’ Welfare with Foundation Day is also clear — farming should be seen not merely as a means of production, but as the foundation of the state’s prosperity. More details about the preparations for Foundation Day and Birsa Munda Jayanti are expected in the coming days, and the state will be watching.
