Asian Games 2026: India Edge Pakistan 4–3 in Hockey Thriller to Reach Final

New Delhi. India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 4–3 in a pulsating men’s hockey semi-final at the Asian Games 2026, sealing a place in the gold-medal match. After squandering a 3–0 lead to be pegged back at 3–3, Abhishek struck the winner in the final minute to spark celebrations in the Indian camp.

India began on the front foot, earning a flurry of penalty corners in the opening quarter. Captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a drag-flick in the fifth minute to make it 1–0, then doubled the lead with another penalty-corner strike in the dying moments of the first quarter.

The dominance continued in the second quarter as Sukhjeet Singh’s field goal in the 23rd minute extended the advantage to 3–0. Pakistan pulled one back just before half-time, with captain Abu Bakr converting a penalty corner to make it 3–1.

Pakistan mounted a spirited comeback in the third quarter, Shahid Hannan reducing the deficit to 3–2 late in the period. Early in the fourth quarter, Rana Waheed struck Pakistan’s third goal, levelling the contest at 3–3 and setting up a nerve-shredding finish.

With pressure mounting on both sides, Abhishek found the net with a field goal in the 60th minute — a strike that proved decisive and sent India into the final.

Final on October 3; Olympic Quota at Stake

India will now contest the gold-medal match on October 3 against the winner of the second semi-final between Malaysia and South Korea. Beyond the gold, an Olympic quota place is also on the line in the final.

Notably, India had won all five of its pool-stage encounters en route to the semi-final, dominating the group phase from start to finish.
