Bhopal Bureau
Summary: On Madhya Pradesh’s 71st Foundation Day, the bugle for Army Day 2027 was sounded at Bhopal’s Shaurya Smarak. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav planted a ‘Sankalp Vriksh’ with soil brought from all 55 districts of the state. Events celebrating the valour, courage and dedication of the Indian Army will now run from 1 November 2026 to 15 January 2027, culminating in a grand Army Day parade in Bhopal on 15 January.
On Sunday morning, Bhopal’s Shaurya Smarak was steeped in patriotism and resolve. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav joined the ‘Sankalp Vriksh’ tree plantation campaign as the chief guest. At the event held at 7:45 in the morning, soil from all 55 districts was offered to a single tree. The tree will now stand as a living symbol of the state’s unity, integrity and collective participation. During the programme, the Chief Minister also viewed a military event exhibition presenting glimpses of the Army Day parade, Ran Hunkaar, the integrated war display and the military exhibition.
Sankalp Vriksh planted at Shaurya Smarak
The ‘Sankalp Vriksh’ was planted under the ‘Meri Maati’ campaign. Soil for it had been collected from the villages, towns and cities of the state. Students who brought urns of soil from different districts were felicitated by the Chief Minister. The message of the event held at the Shaurya Smarak premises was clear — one nation, one army, one resolve. The Chief Minister said it is a matter of great fortune and pride for the state that between 1 November and 15 January 2027, the Indian Army will showcase its indomitable courage, strength and valour on the soil of Bhopal. He greeted all the people of the state on the 71st Foundation Day and extended good wishes for the Army Day event to be held in Bhopal on 15 January 2027.
Soil from 55 districts carries the spirit of unity

The coming together of soil from all 55 districts symbolises that despite different dialects, cultures and traditions, the people of the state are bound by a single thread. The Chief Minister said the initiative has become a symbol of the state’s cultural diversity and unity. The Sankalp Vriksh planted at Shaurya Smarak will remind coming generations that gratitude towards the soldiers who defend the country and dedication to the nation is the greatest resolve of all. Those present at the event described it as a unique way of expressing respect for the Army on the occasion of Foundation Day.
Army valour events to run from 1 November to 15 January
The Army Day 2027 events began on 1 November 2026 and will continue until 15 January 2027. During this period, district-level programmes connected with the Army’s valour, courage and spirit of service will also be organised across the state. The aim of these events is to familiarise the people of the state with the rich heritage of the Indian Army and to inspire the youth of the state to join the Army. The Chief Minister said the state government will extend every possible cooperation to the Indian Army for the event in Bhopal. He also thanked the Defence Ministry and everyone associated with the event.
Grand Army Day parade in Bhopal on 15 January, first time ever
As per the announced programme outline, a grand Army Day parade will be held in Bhopal on 15 January 2027 for the first time. The state government has already shared that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will attend the event as the chief guest. Rehearsals for the parade have been scheduled in January: parade rehearsals on 9, 11 and 13 January, and Shaurya Sandhya rehearsals on 11 and 13 January. The military exhibition will be held from 7 to 12 January. The main parade is proposed on the BHEL Kalibari Marg, while Shaurya Sandhya and Ran Hunkaar will be held at the Tatya Tope Nagar Stadium on the evening of 15 January. An exhibition of the Army’s modern equipment at the Jamboree ground and an integrated combat display at the VIP Boat Club area on the Bhojtal are also proposed.
Why Army Day is observed
Army Day is observed every year on 15 January. The day recalls a historic moment in the history of the Indian Army. On 15 January 1949, General K. M. Cariappa took command of the Indian Army. He became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Army, taking over from the last British Commander-in-Chief. Army Day is observed every year in memory of this historic moment. The event in Bhopal will make this tradition even more special, because for the first time such a grand Army Day event is being held on the soil of the capital.
Shaurya Smarak: an immortal saga of sacrifice
Bhopal’s Shaurya Smarak is a special memorial dedicated to the memory of martyrs. It was dedicated to the nation on 14 October 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Spread over nearly 12 acres on the Arera Hills, the memorial has a 62-foot-high Shaurya Stambh symbolising the Army, Navy and Air Force. The names of martyred soldiers are inscribed on glass boards at the memorial. It also has an underground museum presenting glimpses of the country’s various wars and the valour of soldiers. A gallery recreating the freezing cold of the Siachen Glacier is also a special feature of the memorial. There could hardly have been a better place than Shaurya Smarak to begin the Army Day events.
Foundation Day greetings and a resolve for four sections
On the occasion of Foundation Day, the Chief Minister also reiterated the state’s development resolve. He said the state government has dedicated its entire term to the welfare of four sections — women, youth, the poor and farmers. He also appreciated the innovations and changes made in the country’s military system under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He mentioned the effort to promote the spirit of national service and participation in the Army among youth through the Agniveer scheme. The Chief Minister said the celebration of the Indian Army’s valour and courage on the soil of Madhya Pradesh will be a moment of pride for the entire country.
What next: Rajyotsav and the Army Day countdown
Along with Foundation Day, the three-day Rajyotsav is also underway in the capital, being held at the Lal Parade ground from 1 to 3 November. The theme of the Rajyotsav is ‘Virasat se Vikas’. With it, the countdown to the Army Day events has also begun. The outline of district-level programmes will emerge in the coming days, and preparations for the parade and exhibition will gather pace in January. For the people of Bhopal, the occasion is special because they will get to witness a grand display of the Army’s valour in their own city.
