New Delhi Bureau. Assam’s Nagaon district was jolted awake in the early hours of Tuesday when an earthquake of 4.5 magnitude struck the region, sending residents rushing out of their homes in panic.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor was recorded at 4:23:47 AM IST on 6 October 2026, with its epicentre located in Nagaon district. The quake originated at a depth of 33 kilometres beneath the surface, at coordinates 26.428 degrees north and 93.060 degrees east.
The tremors were felt across Nagaon and the surrounding areas for several seconds. The News Mill and Top Indian News reported that a brief moment of fear gripped the region as the ground shook — many families woke up from sleep and moved towards open spaces, staying outdoors until the tremors subsided.

The NCS shared the complete details of the earthquake on the social media platform X, along with a link to its earthquake-awareness mobile application.
No damage or casualties reported so far
The encouraging news is that no loss of life or property has been reported so far. Given the magnitude and depth of the quake, officials are not anticipating any major damage, and the administration along with the concerned agencies is keeping a close watch on the situation.
Why Assam shakes so often
A large part of north-east India falls in seismic Zone-V, which is considered the highest-risk earthquake zone in the country. This is why Assam and its neighbouring states experience tremors from time to time. Experts say such small quakes are a normal occurrence in this region, but preparedness and awareness remain the best protection.
What to do during an earthquake
The moment you feel the ground shaking, stay calm. Take shelter under a sturdy table or furniture and keep away from windows and heavy objects. If you are outdoors, move to an open area and do not stand under electric poles or trees. Enter buildings only after the shaking stops, and rely on official updates from the NCS or the local administration rather than rumours.
